New Audio Feature for Craftpedia Articles
Posted by: craft_adm - 08-09-2025, 05:19 AM - Forum: Announcements & News - No Replies

Hello everyone,

I’m happy to share a new feature we’ve just introduced on Craftpedia — audio representations of articles!

Now for certain articles, you’ll find an audio player at the bottom of the page that lets you listen to a narrated version of the text. This can be especially helpful for language learners, people who prefer listening over reading, or anyone who just wants to experience the content in a different way.

The audio section is structured as a simple table:

  • First column – the language of the recording
  • Second column – the audio player for that language

Here’s how it works:
  • Each audio file is stored securely on Amazon S3.
  • If an audio version is available for a language, the table will display the corresponding player.
  • If it’s not yet available, the table will still show the row for that language, but the player will be empty until the recording is ready.

In the initial stage, bullet points from the text will be partly excluded from the narrated version to make production faster and help us roll out more audio content quickly. Once most of the audio library is ready, those bullet points will be rewritten into flowing, full sentences — specifically for audio — so that the narration sounds smooth and can be enjoyed without abrupt pauses or list-like breaks.

This method allows us to:
  • Keep translations clean and unaffected by the audio integration
  • Maintain a uniform look across all translated versions of the article
  • Expand easily by adding more languages or updating recordings without touching the main text

The first examples are now live on articles such as Bizen and Hagi ceramics.

We hope this new feature makes Craftpedia even more engaging and accessible. If you’d like to help by contributing audio in different languages, feel free to get in touch!

How to use this section? General info
Posted by: craft_adm - 08-06-2025, 07:00 PM - Forum: General Help - No Replies

Hi everybody!

This section is designed to be a translation hub. Everyone willing to contribute to translating Craftpedia should be registered on this forum and drop here a line. This forum is designed for general help. That means, if you're complete new here, just write your questions and concerns right here.

If however you're in the process of translating / proofreading an article in a specific language, then please write in the corresponding forum. So far I have added:

  • German
  • French
  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Korean

However it is possible to add many more! Ideally there should be 71 subforum, corresponding to the number of languages Craftpedia speaks. Should Craftpedia speak even more languages, corresponding forums will be added to the category "Translation forums".

  Craftpedia speaks 71 language!
Posted by: craft_adm - 07-28-2025, 09:09 PM - Forum: Announcements & News - No Replies

Dear Culture Lover,

We're delighted to inform you that Craftpedia now speaks 71 languages! This is quite an achievement, and we've decided to pause our language expansion for now. The main goal of this project is to spread culture as widely as possible. Ideally, everyone on Earth should be able to read and understand our content.

Having 71 languages on board means that for now, this goal has been met! From this point forward, we'll be adding new articles and carefully translating them into each of these 71 languages.

Should you require more languages, please feel free to leave a comment on this topic.

What exactly is a warp-weighted loom, and where was it used?
Posted by: jane17 - 07-23-2025, 08:42 PM - Forum: Techniques, Tools & Terminology - Replies (3)

Hi everyone,
I've come across the term "warp-weighted loom" in several texts about ancient textile production, especially in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. I'm a bit confused about how it actually worked and what made it different from other types of looms. Could someone explain this in beginner-friendly terms? Also, where exactly was it used historically?
Thanks in advance!
